The short answer

Utah is a no-fault state with a twist. Every policy includes $3,000 of personal injury protection (PIP), and in most cases you can't sue the other driver for pain and suffering until your medical bills pass $3,000.

The good news: only 6.2% of Utah drivers were uninsured in 2023, the 2nd lowest rate in the country. And Utah's Insurance Department publishes real sample prices from insurers, so you can compare before you call anyone.

What Utah requires

Coverage Minimum
Bodily injury liability $25,000 per person / $65,000 per crash (or $80,000 combined)
Property damage liability $15,000
Personal injury protection (PIP) $3,000 per person

That $65,000 per-crash limit is higher than many states' $50,000. The $15,000 for property damage is lower than most. A crash with a newer truck can cost more than that, and you'd owe the difference.

How Utah's no-fault rules work

PIP pays first. After a crash, your own PIP covers your medical bills, lost income, and help with essential services, up to $3,000 per person, no matter who caused it.

The $3,000 threshold. To sue the at-fault driver for "general damages," like pain and suffering, your medical expenses generally must be more than $3,000. Serious outcomes like death, dismemberment, permanent disability, or permanent disfigurement also qualify.

Medical bills are capped at a "reasonable value." Since 1990, the Utah Insurance Department has set what counts as a reasonable charge for medical care paid by PIP, and it updates that list every two years.

Fault still matters. Utah uses comparative negligence. You can collect from the other driver only if you're less than 50% at fault, and your award is reduced by your share.

Uninsured motorist property damage: only without collision

Utah lets you buy uninsured motorist property damage, which pays to fix your car when an identified, at-fault, uninsured driver hits it. But it's only offered if you don't buy collision. If you have collision, that's what fixes your car.

How much is car insurance in Utah? Check the state's tables

The Utah Insurance Department publishes comparison tables each year with sample six-month prices from different insurers. They cover cities and ZIP codes across the state, such as Ogden, and six sample drivers, from a 20-year-old single driver to a married couple age 70.

The tables also show each company's complaint ratio, meaning how many valid complaints it gets for its size. A cheap price isn't much good from a company with a lot of complaints.

By one broad measure, Utah is fairly affordable: in 2021, Utah households spent about 1.09% of their income on car insurance, below the U.S. average of 1.50%.

Car insurance in Salt Lake City

Salt Lake City drivers follow the same state rules. City traffic usually means more claims than rural Utah, so check your ZIP code in the state's comparison tables and get quotes with identical coverage.

Not a quote or an offer. Your price comes from the insurance company.
