The Texas rules in one paragraph
Every San Antonio driver needs liability coverage of at least $30,000 per injured person, $60,000 per crash, and $25,000 for property. Texas policies also carry at least $2,500 of personal injury protection and uninsured motorist coverage, and both stay on unless you sign a form turning them down. An officer at a traffic stop can confirm your coverage instantly through TexasSure, the state's insurance database. More detail is on the Texas car insurance page.
San Antonio crashes by the numbers (2025)
| San Antonio | |
|---|---|
| Total reported crashes | 37,299 |
| Fatal crashes | 159 |
| Deaths | 167 |
| Crashes with serious injuries | 494 |
With that many crashes, a few coverages do a lot of work:
- Collision fixes your car after a crash, whoever caused it.
- PIP pays your medical bills and some lost income, whoever caused it. Keep it unless you have strong health coverage.
- Uninsured motorist pays when the other driver has no insurance. About 14.5% of Texas drivers were uninsured in 2023.
Flash floods and your car
Bexar County is prone to flash flooding. Roads can go under water in minutes, sometimes with little warning. The county runs 150 HALT stations at flood-prone crossings that flash lights, and at some spots drop gates, when water rises.
| If this happens | The coverage that pays |
|---|---|
| Your parked car sits in rising water | Comprehensive |
| You drive into a flooded crossing and the engine is ruined | Comprehensive |
| You hit another car while swerving around water | Collision (yours), or liability (theirs) |
Only a policy with comprehensive pays for water damage to your own car. Before storm season, sign up for Bexar County's road closure alerts, move your car to higher ground when heavy rain is forecast, and never test a flooded road. The county's own motto is "Turn around, don't drown."
Buying a used car? After a big Texas flood, water-damaged cars can end up for sale. Get a vehicle history report and have a mechanic check for water damage before you buy.
Why San Antonio prices run the way they do
A city with more than 37,000 crashes a year produces a lot of claims, and flood and hail storms add more on the comprehensive side. Insurers price those local claims into every policy, then adjust for your part of Bexar County, your driving history, and your vehicle.
Where you have room to save:
- Before you pick an insurer, look it up on HelpInsure.com, the Texas Department of Insurance's free rate and complaint site.
- Be suspicious of a quote that's far cheaper than the rest. It may be missing comprehensive or PIP.
- A higher collision or comprehensive deductible trims the premium without leaving you unprotected.
- Insuring your home and car together often earns a discount. See San Antonio homeowners insurance.
