The short answer
Life insurance often costs less than people think. In a 2025 study, healthy adults ages 18 to 30 guessed it cost 10 to 12 times more than it really does. Your age and health matter most. So do the amount you buy and how long it lasts.

What affects your life insurance price
Price range
Life insurance prices depend a lot on your age and health, so we don't list one average. Just know that most young, healthy people guess far too high. Not a quote or an offer. Your price comes from the insurance company. Source: LIMRA 2025 Insurance Barometer Study.
What moves the number
- Your age. The younger you buy, the less it costs.
- Your health. Health problems, smoking and risky hobbies raise the price.
- How much coverage. More coverage costs more.
- Term or permanent. Term is much cheaper. Permanent costs more but lasts your whole life and builds cash value.
- How long the term is. A 30-year term costs more than a 10-year term.
Term vs. permanent
- Term life covers you for a set time, like 20 or 30 years. If you die in that time, your family gets paid. It's the simplest and cheapest.
- Permanent life (like whole life) lasts your whole life and builds cash value. It costs a lot more for the same amount of coverage.
For most families, the question is simple: who would struggle if your income stopped? Term life is often enough to cover those years.
How much do you need?
Add up what your family would need if you weren't here:
- Paying off debts, like your mortgage and car loans
- Replacing your income for the years your family depends on it
- Future costs, like childcare or college
- Then subtract savings and any coverage you already have
What to ask before you choose
- "Is this term or permanent?" Know which one you're buying.
- "Will the price stay the same the whole term?" Look for "level" premiums.
- "Do I need a medical exam?" No-exam policies are faster but often cost more.
- "Can I convert this to permanent later?" It's a useful option if your health changes.
- "How strong is the insurance company?" Check its financial rating.
The catch: life insurance through work is great, but it's often small and usually ends if you leave the job. Don't count on it as your only coverage. And update your beneficiaries after big life changes like a marriage, divorce or new baby.
