The short answer
Atlanta drivers follow Georgia rules: at least 25/50/25 in liability. The local risk to plan for is uninsured drivers. About 19% of Georgia drivers were uninsured in 2023, well above the national rate of 15.4%.
That makes your uninsured motorist coverage, and which type you pick, one of the most important choices on an Atlanta policy.

What Georgia requires
- Liability of 25/50/25: $25,000 per injured person, $50,000 per crash, and $25,000 for property damage.
- Georgia is an at-fault state. If you're 50% or more at fault, you generally can't collect from the other driver.
Uninsured drivers in Atlanta
Georgia had the 11th highest share of uninsured drivers in the country in 2023, at 19.0%. That's roughly 1 in 5. If one of them hits you, the at-fault driver likely can't pay for your injuries or car.
Uninsured motorist (UM) coverage pays in that situation. Georgia offers two types:
- Add-on UM pays on top of whatever the at-fault driver's insurance pays. It costs more, but protects you better.
- Reduced-by UM is reduced by what the other driver's insurance pays. It only fills the gap up to your UM limit.
Ask which type your quote includes. They can look the same on a price sheet and pay very differently after a crash.
Don't let your coverage lapse
Georgia insurers report your coverage to the state electronically. If you go 10 days or more without coverage on a registered car, you'll get a $25 fine. If you don't pay it within 30 days, your registration is suspended, and you can owe up to $160 more.
When you switch insurers, make sure the new policy starts before the old one ends.
What drives car insurance prices in Atlanta
- Heavy traffic on busy interstates means more crashes.
- Uninsured drivers raise the cost of UM claims.
- Theft. Georgia thefts fell 28% in 2025, but theft is still more common in cities. Comprehensive pays if your car is stolen. Learn what comprehensive covers.
- Your driving record, your car, and your coverage.
Not a quote or an offer. Your price comes from the insurance company.
How to find cheaper car insurance in Atlanta
- Compare the same coverage. Cheap quotes are often minimum liability with reduced-by UM or no UM at all. Line up limits, UM type, and deductibles.
- Raise your deductibles on collision and comprehensive instead of dropping them.
- Ask about discounts for a clean record, bundling, or a good student.
- Keep continuous coverage. A lapse can mean fines and higher prices later.

What to ask before you choose
- "Is my uninsured motorist coverage add-on or reduced-by?"
- "What are my UM limits?"
- "How much would higher liability limits cost?"
- "Do I have comprehensive and collision?"
- "Will this new policy start before my old one ends?"
The catch: in a state where about 1 in 5 drivers is uninsured, reduced-by UM at the minimum limit can leave a big gap after a serious crash. Price out add-on UM before you decide.
