The short answer
Charlotte drivers follow North Carolina rules, which changed on July 1, 2025. The minimum is now 50/100/50, and every policy includes uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage.
North Carolina car insurance is still among the least expensive in the country, at about $753 a year on average in 2023. But the state's points system means one ticket or at-fault crash can raise your price a lot, for years.

What North Carolina requires
- Liability of 50/100/50: $50,000 per injured person, $100,000 per crash, and $50,000 for property damage, for policies issued or renewed on or after July 1, 2025.
- Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage, generally at the same limits as your liability.
Check your next renewal to make sure your policy moved up to the new minimum.
Insurance points: what one ticket costs
North Carolina's Safe Driver Incentive Plan adds points to your insurance for tickets and at-fault crashes. Each level raises your premium by a set percentage:
- 1 point (like a small speeding ticket or a minor at-fault crash): 40%
- 2 points: 55%
- 3 points: 70%
- 4 points (like reckless driving): 90%
Since July 1, 2025, many convictions of 4 or more points carry a surcharge for 5 years instead of 3. A small speeding ticket may not add points on its own, but insurers now look back 5 years for other violations that make it count.
Theft and uninsured drivers
North Carolina had the 8th most vehicle thefts of any state in 2025. Comprehensive pays if your car is stolen. About 11.8% of North Carolina drivers were uninsured in 2023. Your required UM and UIM coverage protects you if one of them hits you.

What drives car insurance prices in Charlotte
- Your insurance points. This is the biggest one.
- Your years of driving experience. New drivers pay a surcharge longer since July 2025.
- City traffic and commute distance.
- Your car, coverage, and deductibles.
Not a quote or an offer. Your price comes from the insurance company.
How to find cheaper car insurance in Charlotte
- Keep a clean record. Avoiding one ticket can save more than any discount.
- Before you pay a ticket, ask whether it will add insurance points.
- Compare the same coverage from several insurers.
- Raise your deductibles on collision and comprehensive.

What to ask before you choose
- "Does my policy meet the new 50/100/50 minimum?"
- "How many insurance points do I have, and when do they fall off?"
- "What are my UM and UIM limits?"
- "Do I have comprehensive for theft and storm damage?"
- "What would a higher deductible save me?"
The catch: in North Carolina, the cheapest insurer today may not stay the cheapest after a ticket. The points system is statewide, so a surcharge doesn't go away just because you switch companies. Protecting your record matters more here than shopping alone.
