Car theft in Memphis
Memphis previously had the worst vehicle theft rate among those metros. In 2025, two California metros passed it, but Memphis was still 3rd, at 427.75 thefts per 100,000 people. Statewide, Tennessee thefts fell 31% in 2025, so things are moving in the right direction.
Comprehensive coverage is what pays if your car is stolen. Liability doesn't. If your car is paid off and you dropped comprehensive to save money, in Memphis that's a big risk.
The National Insurance Crime Bureau's advice comes down to making your car a harder target than the one next to it. Thieves test door handles, so a locked car with the windows up gets skipped. A car left idling in the driveway on a cold morning is an easy grab. Bright parking spots help, and a visible steering wheel lock or a hidden GPS tracker adds another layer. Trackers also make recovery more likely, and some insurers give a discount for them, so ask.
Hyundai and Kia thefts have dropped three years running thanks to software fixes. If you own one and never got the update, a dealer can check.
Uninsured drivers: keep your UM coverage
More than 1 in 5 Tennessee drivers had no insurance in 2023. If one of them hits you, their liability coverage isn't there to pay you.
Uninsured motorist (UM) coverage is your backstop. In Tennessee, it automatically matches your liability limits. You can only lower it or drop it in writing. In Memphis, think twice before you sign that form.
What Tennessee requires (quick version)
- Liability of 25/50/25: $25,000 per person and $50,000 per crash for injuries, $25,000 for property damage.
- Electronic insurance checks. If the state can't verify your coverage, you'll get a notice. Ignore it and you'll owe $25, then $100 with your registration suspended.
- The 49% fault rule. You can collect from the other driver only if you're less at fault than they are.

What drives car insurance prices in Memphis
Memphis prices carry the weight of two local problems: stolen cars show up as comprehensive claims, and crashes with uninsured drivers show up as UM claims. On top of that, insurers look at your part of Memphis and Shelby County, your driving history, and the car you drive.
Not a quote or an offer. Your price comes from the insurance company.
How to find cheaper car insurance in Memphis
- Compare the same coverage from several insurers. Prices for the same driver can vary a lot.
- Raise your comprehensive deductible instead of dropping comprehensive.
- Ask about anti-theft discounts for trackers, alarms, and kill switches.
- Keep continuous coverage. A gap can raise your price and trigger state penalties.
