What Washington requires (quick version)
- Liability of 25/50/10: $25,000 per injured person, $50,000 per crash, $10,000 for property damage.
- Underinsured motorist coverage, included unless you reject it in writing.
- Personal injury protection (PIP), which insurers must offer.
Driving without insurance can mean a fine of $550 or more. The full rules are on the Washington car insurance page.
That $10,000 for property damage is low for Seattle streets. A crash with a newer SUV or an electric car can cost more than that to fix, and you'd owe the difference. Ask what higher limits cost.
Car theft in the Seattle area
| 2025 | |
|---|---|
| Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue metro thefts | 12,684 (10th in the U.S.) |
| Washington State thefts | 18,039 (9th among states) |
| Change in Washington thefts from 2024 | Down 39% |
Only comprehensive coverage pays if your car is stolen. Liability doesn't. If you have a loan or lease, your lender likely requires comprehensive already. If your car is paid off, check that you didn't drop it to save money.
Ways to lower your risk, from the National Insurance Crime Bureau:
- Lock your car and take your keys, every time.
- Never leave the car running while you're away from it.
- Park in well-lit spots.
- Consider a steering wheel lock, alarm, kill switch, or GPS tracker. Ask your insurer whether any of them earns a discount.
Driving a Hyundai or Kia? Thefts of these models have fallen for three years in a row after software updates. If you haven't gotten the update for your car, ask a dealer.
Uninsured drivers and hit-and-runs
About 19.1% of Washington drivers were uninsured in 2023, the 10th highest rate in the country.
Washington's underinsured motorist coverage (UIM) helps in city driving in ways that matter:
- Hit-and-run crashes are covered, when the driver who hit you can't be found.
- "Phantom vehicle" crashes are covered, when another car forces you off the road without hitting you. You must report it to police within 72 hours and have facts that back up your account.
- The property damage deductible is small: up to $100, or up to $300 for hit-and-run and phantom vehicle claims.
If you're offered a form to reject UIM, read it carefully before you sign.
What drives car insurance prices in Seattle
- Theft, which raises comprehensive claims
- Dense traffic, which means more fender benders
- Your ZIP code. Prices can vary across Seattle, Tacoma, Bellevue, and the suburbs.
- Your driving record, your car, and your coverage choices
Not a quote or an offer. Your price comes from the insurance company.

The catch: a quote with the lowest price may have dropped comprehensive or UIM. In Seattle, those are the two coverages most likely to pay you after a theft or a hit-and-run. Compare quotes with the same coverage.
