The short answer
Dallas drivers follow Texas rules: at least 30/60/25 in liability, with personal injury protection and uninsured motorist coverage included unless you turn them down in writing. The local risks are hail and theft. The Dallas-Fort Worth area had the 6th most vehicle thefts in the U.S. in 2025.
Liability doesn't pay for your own car after a hailstorm or a theft. Comprehensive does.

What Texas requires
- Liability of 30/60/25: $30,000 per injured person, $60,000 per crash, and $25,000 for property damage.
- Personal injury protection (PIP) of at least $2,500 per person, included unless you reject it in writing. PIP pays medical bills for you and your passengers, whoever caused the crash.
- Uninsured motorist coverage, also included unless you reject it in writing.
Texas checks your coverage through an online system called TexasSure, so police can often confirm it at a traffic stop.
Hail season in Dallas
North Texas storms can drop hail big enough to dent roofs, hoods, and windshields across a whole neighborhood in minutes.
- Only comprehensive pays for hail damage to your car.
- Check your comprehensive deductible. A $1,000 deductible means you pay the first $1,000 of a hail claim.
- Park in a garage or covered spot when storms are forecast.

Car theft in Dallas-Fort Worth
Thefts fell 23% nationwide in 2025. But the Dallas-Fort Worth area still had 21,638 vehicle thefts, the 6th most of any U.S. metro. Texas as a whole had the 2nd most thefts of any state.
Comprehensive also pays if your car is stolen. To lower your risk:
- Lock your doors, take your keys, and never leave the car running unattended.
- Park in well-lit areas.
- Consider a steering wheel lock, alarm, or GPS tracker, and ask whether it earns a discount.
Uninsured drivers
About 14.5% of Texas drivers were uninsured in 2023. Keeping the uninsured motorist coverage Texas includes by default protects you if one of them hits you.
What drives car insurance prices in Dallas
- Hail and theft, which raise comprehensive claims.
- Heavy highway traffic, which means more crashes.
- Your ZIP code. Prices can vary across the metro.
- Your driving record, your car, and your coverage.
Not a quote or an offer. Your price comes from the insurance company.
How to find cheaper car insurance in Dallas
- Use HelpInsure.com. The Texas Department of Insurance's free site shows sample rates and complaint records by company.
- Compare the same coverage. Cheap quotes often drop comprehensive and collision. In hail country, that can cost you.
- Raise your comprehensive deductible instead of dropping the coverage.
- Bundle with Dallas homeowners insurance or renters insurance.

What to ask before you choose
- "Do I have comprehensive for hail and theft? What's the deductible?"
- "Did I keep PIP and uninsured motorist coverage?"
- "Is glass covered, and with what deductible?"
- "Is a rental car covered while mine is in the shop after a hailstorm?"
- "How much would higher liability limits cost?"
The catch: after a big hailstorm, body shops fill up for weeks. If you don't have rental car coverage, you could be without a car the whole time. It's a small add-on to price out.
