The short answer

Michigan drivers paid about $1,418 a year for car insurance in 2023, the 3rd highest in the country. Michigan is a no-fault state, and its coverage works differently from most states.

Since 2020, you get to choose how much personal injury protection (PIP) medical coverage to carry. That choice is one of the biggest things that changes your price, and it deserves a careful look.

What Michigan requires

Every Michigan auto policy must include three coverages:

  1. Personal injury protection (PIP). Pays medical care, recovery, and rehab for you and your household after a crash, no matter who caused it. You choose the medical limit (see below).
  2. Property protection insurance (PPI). Pays up to $1 million for damage your car does in Michigan to other people's property, like buildings, fences, and properly parked cars. It doesn't pay for damage to cars that are moving.
  3. Bodily injury and property damage liability (BI/PD). Pays if you're legally responsible for hurting someone or damaging their property in certain cases, like a serious injury or a crash outside Michigan.

Liability limits. If you don't pick your own, your policy carries 250/500: up to $250,000 per person and $500,000 per crash for injuries. The lowest you can pick is 50/100. Both include $10,000 for property damage in another state.

How Michigan no-fault works

"No-fault" means your own PIP pays your medical bills after a crash, whoever caused it. It doesn't mean nobody is ever at fault.

  • Injuries: your PIP pays first. You can still be sued if you cause a death or a serious injury, which is why liability limits matter.
  • Damage to your own car: PIP doesn't cover it. You need collision coverage for that. Ask your insurer which type of collision coverage it offers, since some types pay only if you weren't mainly at fault.
  • Mini-tort: if you're 50% or more at fault, the other driver can sue you for up to $3,000 in damage to their car that their insurance didn't pay. You can buy coverage for this.

Your 6 PIP medical choices

These are the most your insurer pays per person, per crash, for PIP medical costs:

Choice Who can pick it
Unlimited Anyone. This is the default if you don't choose.
Up to $500,000 Anyone
Up to $250,000 Anyone
Up to $250,000 with exclusions People whose health insurance (not Medicare) covers auto injuries. Covered household members can be excluded.
Up to $50,000 You must be on Medicaid. Household members need other auto or health coverage for auto injuries.
Opt out of PIP medical You must have Medicare Parts A and B. Household members need other auto or health coverage.

How the choice affects your price. The law required insurers to cut average PIP medical premiums for each level, with the biggest cuts on the lower levels. Your own price depends on your situation.

Before you pick a lower level, check your health plan. Some plans limit or exclude auto injuries, or have high deductibles. A serious crash can cost far more than $50,000 or $250,000, and you could owe what PIP doesn't pay.

What changes your price in Michigan

  • Your PIP choice. Lower medical limits cost less, but carry more risk.
  • Your driving record. Tickets and at-fault crashes raise your rate.
  • Your car. Newer and pricier cars cost more to cover for collision and comprehensive.
  • Your liability limits and deductibles.

What insurers can't use. Michigan's 2019 law bars insurers from using sex, marital status, home ownership, credit score, education, occupation, and ZIP code to set car insurance rates.

Not a quote or an offer. Your price comes from the insurance company.

Car insurance in Detroit

The same PIP choices, required coverages, and rating rules apply in Detroit as in the rest of Michigan. Prices can still vary a lot from company to company, so compare several quotes. Line up the same PIP level, liability limits, and deductibles when you do.

What to ask before you choose

  • "Which PIP medical level does this quote include? What would the others cost?"
  • "Does my health insurance cover auto injuries?" Ask your health plan too.
  • "Are my liability limits 250/500 or lower? What would higher limits cost?"
  • "What kind of collision coverage is this?"
  • "Do I have mini-tort coverage?"
  • "Do I have uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage?" It pays for your injuries, like pain and suffering, if the at-fault driver can't. It's optional in Michigan.

The catch: the cheapest Michigan quotes often use the lowest PIP level. That can make sense if you have strong health coverage, but it can leave a big gap after a serious crash. Price out unlimited and $500,000 before you decide.
