The short answer
Nebraska keeps things fairly simple: you need liability, uninsured motorist, and underinsured motorist coverage. Only about 9.5% of Nebraska drivers were uninsured in 2023, one of the lower rates in the country.
But there are two details worth knowing. You have to ask in writing for higher uninsured and underinsured limits. And a no-insurance ticket can leave you proving coverage to the state for three years.

What Nebraska requires
| Coverage | Nebraska minimum |
|---|---|
| Bodily injury liability | $25,000 per person, $50,000 per crash |
| Property damage liability | $25,000 |
| Uninsured motorist (UM) | $25,000 per person, $50,000 per crash |
| Underinsured motorist (UIM) | $25,000 per person, $50,000 per crash |
Liability pays for injuries and damage you cause to others. UM pays for your injuries when the at-fault driver has no insurance. UIM pays when the at-fault driver has some insurance, but not enough for your bills.
The Nebraska Department of Insurance warns that these minimums may not be enough to cover a serious crash.
Raising your UM and UIM: put it in writing
Here's a Nebraska rule many drivers never hear about. Your insurer must sell you higher UM and UIM limits if you ask for them in writing. The law lets you go up to $100,000 per person and $300,000 per crash.
But your insurer doesn't have to remind you that higher limits exist when your policy renews. So if you raised your liability limits over the years, your UM and UIM may still be sitting at the 25/50 minimum. Check your declarations page, the summary page of your policy, and ask for a quote at higher limits.
Why it matters: UM and UIM pay for your injuries. If a driver with a minimum policy causes a crash that puts you in the hospital for weeks, their $25,000 may run out fast. Your own UIM is what's left.
Driving without insurance in Nebraska
Driving uninsured in Nebraska is a Class II misdemeanor. On top of any fine:
- Your license, registration, and plates are suspended until you comply with the law.
- You must then keep proof of financial responsibility for three years. Most people do this with an SR-22, a form your insurer files with the state. See SR-22 insurance.
- Your car could be impounded, according to the state Department of Insurance.
Insured but couldn't show it? If you had valid insurance when you got the ticket, you can ask for it to be dismissed by showing proof within 10 days.
Driving outside Nebraska
The Department of Insurance notes that most insurers cover you if you drive into Canada. Mexico is different. You'll need a separate Mexican auto insurance policy before you cross the border.
What Nebraska car insurance costs
Nebraska is fairly affordable. In 2021, Nebraska households spent about 1.05% of their income on car insurance, below the U.S. average of 1.50%.
Your price depends on where you live and drive. Omaha and Lincoln drivers usually see more traffic and more claims than rural drivers. Hail is a regular part of Nebraska summers, and only comprehensive coverage pays for hail damage to your own car. Learn what comprehensive covers.
