The short answer
By one measure, Idaho is the most affordable state in the country for car insurance. In 2021, Idaho households spent about 0.96% of their income on it, the smallest share of any state. Drivers paid about $724 a year on average in 2023, the 4th lowest.
Only about 6.4% of Idaho drivers were uninsured in 2023, the 3rd lowest rate. Even so, there's one choice on an Idaho policy that's worth getting right: which kind of underinsured motorist coverage you have.

What Idaho requires
- $25,000 for injury or death of one person
- $50,000 for injury or death of two or more people
- $15,000 for damage to other people's property
Insurers must also include uninsured motorist (UM) and underinsured motorist (UIM) coverage for injuries, unless you reject them in writing. Your limits usually match your liability limits.
Two kinds of underinsured coverage
Your insurer has to give you an Idaho UM/UIM Disclosure Form that explains which type of UIM it sells. The difference can be large:
| "Excess" UIM | "Offset" (difference in limits) UIM | |
|---|---|---|
| How it works | Adds on top of the at-fault driver's coverage | Is reduced by what the at-fault driver's insurer pays |
| You: $25,000 UIM. Other driver: $25,000 | Up to $50,000 available | Up to $25,000 available (UIM adds nothing) |
| You: $100,000 UIM. Other driver: $25,000 | Up to $125,000 available | Up to $100,000 available |
Excess UIM gives you more protection for the same limit. When you compare quotes, ask each insurer which type it offers. Two policies with the same "$100,000 UIM" on paper can pay very differently.
How Idaho checks for insurance
Since a 2019 law, Idaho's DMV gets coverage data directly from insurers licensed in Idaho.
- If your car shows no insurance for two months in a row, you get a warning letter.
- You have 30 days to show proof of insurance, or that you're exempt.
- If you don't, your registration is suspended.
- To reinstate it, you show proof and pay $75.
Insured but still got a letter? Some insurers don't report correctly. Use the DMV's online self-reporting tool or call 208-584-4343.
Insured by an out-of-state company? If it doesn't report to Idaho, you'll be treated as uninsured until you send proof.
Moved? The DMV still counts the notice as sent. Keep your address current.
Car insurance in Boise and the Treasure Valley
Boise-area drivers follow the same state rules. A growing metro usually means more traffic and more claims than rural Idaho, so compare quotes with identical coverage, and check the UIM type on each.
Not a quote or an offer. Your price comes from the insurance company.
