The short answer

Maine drivers paid the lowest average car insurance premium in the country in 2023: about $926 a year, according to Maine's Bureau of Insurance. The national average was about $1,438, roughly 55% higher.

What makes that unusual is that Maine requires more coverage than most states, not less. Maine also has the lowest share of uninsured drivers in the U.S., about 5.7%. Here's what Maine requires and why the low price doesn't mean thin coverage.

What Maine requires

Required coverage Maine minimum A typical state minimum, for comparison
Bodily injury liability $50,000 per person / $100,000 per crash $25,000 / $50,000
Property damage liability $25,000 $10,000 to $25,000
Uninsured/underinsured motorist $50,000 per person / $100,000 per crash Often optional
Medical payments $2,000 per person Often optional

Your uninsured motorist coverage follows your liability limits. If you buy higher liability limits, say 100/300, Maine law requires your uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage to match, unless you reject the higher amount in writing.

That's a good default. Maine's uninsured motorist coverage also works as underinsured coverage, paying when the at-fault driver's limits are lower than yours.

Why Maine car insurance is so cheap

The Bureau of Insurance points to a competitive market, with many insurers selling coverage. Between August 2024 and July 2025, approved rate increases averaged less than 4%, lower than in many states.

Other factors that likely help:

  • Few uninsured drivers. At about 5.7%, Maine has the lowest uninsured rate in the country. In most states, it's over 10%.
  • Affordability. Maine households spent about 1.00% of their income on car insurance in 2021, compared with 1.50% nationally.

Even in Maine, check these

  • Deer and moose. Hitting an animal is usually a comprehensive claim. If you drop comprehensive on an older car, a collision with wildlife may not be covered.
  • No grace period. Maine law doesn't give a grace period for car insurance payments. Pay on time.
  • Disagree on the damage amount? Most auto policies have an appraisal clause. You and your insurer each hire an appraiser, and an umpire settles any difference.

How to keep your price low in Maine

  • Compare several insurers. Maine has a lot of them.
  • Raise deductibles on collision and comprehensive if you have savings.
  • Bundle with your homeowners policy. See Maine homeowners insurance.

Not a quote or an offer. Your price comes from the insurance company.
