The short answer

Gutter guards cost about $1,521 installed on average, with most homeowners paying $653 to $2,459. That's about $6 to $13 per linear foot, including labor.

Guards keep most leaves and debris out of your gutters. But they don't eliminate cleaning. They cut down how often you need it.

What moves the number

  • Length of your gutters.
  • Type and material of guard.
  • Roof height and pitch. Two-story homes cost more to reach.
  • Condition of your gutters. Guards on sagging or leaking gutters won't help.

Types of gutter guards

  • Screens: metal or plastic mesh with larger holes. Low cost. Small debris like seeds can get through.
  • Micro-mesh: very fine mesh that blocks small debris and pine needles. Usually costs more.
  • Reverse curve (surface tension): a solid cover that lets water curl around the edge into the gutter while leaves slide off. Can overflow in very heavy rain.
  • Foam and brush inserts: sit inside the gutter. Low cost and easy to install, but can clog or wear out faster.

The best type depends on the trees near your home. Pine needles call for finer mesh. Big leaves can be handled by most types.

Are gutter guards worth it?

They're more likely worth it if:

  • You have trees close to the house.
  • Your gutters clog often, or you can't safely clean them yourself.
  • Clogged gutters have caused overflow, fascia rot, or a wet basement. See basement waterproofing.

They're less likely worth it if you have few trees, a one-story home you can clean easily, or gutters that need replacing anyway. In that case, see gutters first.

What gutter guards won't do

  • Eliminate maintenance. You'll still need to clear debris from the top of some guards and check the gutters now and then.
  • Fix bad gutters. Leaks, sags, and poor slope need repair first.
  • Stop every overflow. Very heavy rain can overwhelm some designs.

What to ask

  • "What type of guard is this, and how does it handle pine needles or seeds?"
  • "What's the price per linear foot, including labor?"
  • "Will you clean and repair the gutters first?"
  • "Does installation affect my roof warranty?" Some guards slide under shingles.
  • "What's the warranty, and does it cover clogging?"

The catch: some gutter guard companies use in-home sales visits with big "today only" discounts. Get the price per foot in writing, and compare at least one other quote before you sign.
