The short answer

A new exterior door costs $200 to $7,000 installed. A basic steel door is on the low end. Big wood, glass and double doors are on the high end.

What affects your door price

Price range

Exterior door installation costs about $200 to $7,000. If your door frame needs replacing too, add about $150 to $380. Not a quote or an offer. Your price comes from the installer. Source: Angi, 2026.

What moves the number

  • Material. Steel costs the least and is strong. Fiberglass doesn't dent or rot. Wood looks rich but needs care.
  • Size and style. Double doors, sliding doors and folding patio doors take longer to install.
  • Glass. Windows in or around the door add cost.
  • The frame. A worn or rotten frame needs to be replaced along with the door.
  • Hardware. Smart locks and fancy handles add up.

What to ask before you choose

  • "Is this a pre-hung door or just the door?" A pre-hung door comes already in its frame. It usually seals better and goes in faster.
  • "Does the price include the lock, handle and trim?"
  • "Will you haul away the old door?"
  • "Is the door rated for energy savings?" Look for the ENERGY STAR label.
  • "What does the warranty cover?"

The catch: a door is only as good as how it's installed. A great door put in badly will leak air and water. Ask the installer how they seal and flash the bottom of the door, and ask if their work comes with its own warranty.
