The short answer

A motorhome needs the same kind of coverage as a car. A trailer you tow often needs its own policy to cover the trailer itself. If you live in your RV, you need special "full-timer" coverage.

Enter your ZIP code to see what to compare in your area. You don't need to give us your name or phone number.

What affects your RV insurance price

Price range

Prices vary a lot by RV and how you use it, so we don't list one average. Not a quote or an offer. Your price comes from the insurance company.

What moves the number

  • Type of RV. Motorhomes cost more to cover than trailers.
  • What it's worth. Newer, bigger RVs cost more to cover.
  • How much you use it. Weekend trips cost less than living in it all year.
  • Your driving record.
  • Where you store it.

Motorhome vs. trailer

  • Motorhomes drive themselves, so they need liability coverage like a car. Add collision and comprehensive to protect the RV.
  • Travel trailers and fifth wheels get towed. Your car or truck policy may cover a crash you cause while towing. But you'll likely need a separate policy to cover the trailer itself.

What to ask before you choose

  • "Are my things inside the RV covered?" Home insurance gives very little. An RV policy can cover more.
  • "Do I need full-timer coverage?" If the RV is your home, you do. It adds personal property and liability coverage like a home policy.
  • "What happens if my RV is totaled?" Ask if it pays what it's worth used, or what it costs to replace.
  • "Is roadside help included?" Towing an RV costs far more than towing a car.
  • "Is liability covered when I'm parked at a campsite?"

The catch: people often assume their car policy covers their trailer. It usually only covers liability while you tow. It doesn't pay to fix or replace the trailer itself. Check before your first trip.
