The short answer
Most states require at least liability insurance on a motorcycle. Your bike, your riding record and where you ride matter most for your price.

What affects your motorcycle insurance price
Price range
Prices vary a lot by bike and rider, so we don't list one average. Not a quote or an offer. Your price comes from the insurance company.
What moves the number
- Your bike. Sport bikes cost more to cover than cruisers.
- Your riding record. Tickets and crashes raise your price.
- Your experience. A safety course can earn a discount.
- Where you live and park. Theft risk matters.
- Your coverage. More coverage and lower deductibles cost more.
What coverage to look at
- Liability. Pays for injuries and damage you cause to others. Most states require it.
- Guest passenger liability. Helps if your passenger gets hurt. It isn't always included.
- Collision. Pays to fix your bike after a crash.
- Comprehensive. Pays for theft, fire and other damage that isn't a crash.
- Uninsured motorist. Pays you if a driver with no insurance, or not enough, hits you.
What to ask before you choose
- "Are my passengers covered?"
- "Are my custom parts covered?" Chrome, custom paint and add-ons may need extra coverage.
- "Is my riding gear covered?" Helmets and jackets are expensive.
- "Do I get a discount for a safety course?"
- "Can I lower my price in the off-season?" Some insurers let you cut coverage while the bike is stored.
The catch: most policies pay what your bike is worth used, minus your deductible. Custom parts you added may not be covered at all unless you add them to your policy. Tell your insurer about every upgrade.
