The short answer

Local movers usually cost $876 to $2,547. How much stuff you have and how many hours it takes matter most.

Most local movers charge by the hour, so being packed and ready before the crew arrives is the easiest way to save.

What affects your local moving price

What moves the number

  • Size of your home. More rooms means more stuff and more hours.
  • Crew size and hours. Most local movers charge by the hour for a crew and truck.
  • Stairs, elevators, and long walks. These slow the crew down.
  • Packing. Having the movers pack costs more.
  • Big or tricky items. Pianos, safes, and hot tubs cost extra.

How hourly pricing adds up

Your bill usually includes the crew's hourly rate times the hours worked, plus a few extras. Ask about each one:

  • A minimum number of hours, even if the move is quick
  • Travel time to your home and back to their base
  • Supplies, like tape, pads, and shrink wrap
  • Fees for stairs, long carries, or heavy items

How much to tip movers

Tipping isn't required, but it's customary when the crew does good work. Common guidance is about $4 to $15 per mover per hour, $20 to $50 per mover for a full day, or about 10% to 20% of the total bill. Tip more for hard jobs, like lots of stairs, heavy furniture, or bad weather. Cold drinks and snacks are a nice touch too.

Moving-day checklist

  • Pack, tape, and label every box by room.
  • Take apart beds and empty dressers.
  • Set aside a bag with medicine, chargers, and papers you'll need right away.
  • Reserve elevators or parking if your building requires it.
  • Walk through each room with the crew lead before they leave.

What to ask before you choose

  • "Is there a minimum number of hours?"
  • "Do you charge for drive time to my home and back?"
  • "What extra fees might I see?"
  • "How are my things protected if something breaks?"
  • "Are you licensed and insured?" Local moves inside one state follow that state's rules. Check your state's requirements.

The catch: hourly moves get pricey fast when you're not ready. Every hour the crew waits costs you.
