The short answer
A 10-by-10 storage unit often costs about $125 to $175 a month. Size, location and climate control matter most.

Not a quote or an offer. Your price comes from the storage company. Prices: HomeGuide (data updated 2024). "Roughly holds" is a general guide. Ask the facility.
Climate-controlled units usually cost about $100 to $250 a month. They keep the temperature between about 50° and 85°F, which protects wood, electronics, photos and papers.
What moves the number
- Size. A 5-by-5 unit costs far less than a 10-by-20.
- Location. Big cities cost more.
- Climate control. Keeps things from getting too hot, cold or damp. It costs more.
- Access. Ground floor and drive-up units cost more.
- Insurance. Many places require it.
What to ask before you choose
- "How long does the move-in price last, and what will I pay after that?"
- "How much notice do you give before raising my rent?"
- "Is insurance required, and does my home or renters policy count?"
- "What are the access hours?"
- "What happens if I'm late on a payment?"
The catch: first-month deals often jump a few months in. And if you fall behind on payments, the storage company can sell what's in your unit under your state's rules. Set up autopay and read the late-fee rules.
