What affects your water damage price

Price range

Water damage restoration costs about $2,000 to $6,000 on average. Big jobs with mold or sewage cost much more. Not a quote or an offer. Your price comes from the company. Source: HomeGuide, 2026.

What moves the number

  • How much got wet. One room costs far less than a whole floor.
  • Type of water. Clean water from a pipe is the cheapest to clean up. Sewage or flood water costs the most.
  • How long it sat. The longer it's wet, the more has to be torn out.
  • Mold. If mold grows, cleanup costs more.
  • What has to be replaced. Drywall, carpet, floors and cabinets add up.

What to do first

  1. Stop the water. Turn off the main water valve if a pipe burst.
  2. Stay safe. Turn off power to wet areas if you can do it safely.
  3. Take photos and video of everything before cleanup starts.
  4. Call your insurance company. Ask what's covered before you sign anything.
  5. Start drying fast. The EPA says to dry wet areas within 24 to 48 hours to help stop mold.

What to ask before you choose

  • "Are you IICRC-certified?" That's the main training group for water cleanup.
  • "Will you work with my insurance company?"
  • "How will you check that everything is dry?" Good companies use moisture meters.
  • "What will you remove, and why?"
  • "Can I see a written estimate before you start the rebuild?"

The catch: home insurance usually covers sudden water damage, like a burst pipe. It usually doesn't cover floods or slow leaks that went on for a long time. Also, don't sign any form that hands your insurance claim over to the company. Read everything first.
