The short answer

Most new floors cost about $4 to $15 per square foot installed. For 500 square feet, that's about $2,000 to $7,500. The type of floor matters most.

What moves the number

  • Floor type. Carpet costs the least. Hardwood and tile cost the most.
  • Square footage. Measure each room: length times width.
  • Taking out the old floor. Tearing out tile is much harder than pulling up carpet.
  • The floor underneath. Uneven or damaged subfloors must be fixed first.
  • Stairs and odd shapes. These take more cutting and time.

What to ask before you choose

  • "Does the price include removing the old floor and hauling it away?"
  • "Will you check and level the subfloor?" Floors over a bumpy base can crack or squeak.
  • "How much extra material should I buy?" Most jobs need extra for cuts and waste. Ask how much.
  • "Do you move the furniture?" Some charge extra.
  • "What does the warranty cover: the floor, the install, or both?"

The catch: for bathrooms, kitchens, laundry rooms and basements, pick a floor that handles water. Luxury vinyl and tile do well. Regular hardwood and laminate can swell if they get wet.
