The short answer

A stair lift for a straight staircase costs about $2,000 to $8,500 installed. Curved stairs cost a lot more, because the rail is custom-made.

What affects your stair lift price

Price range

A stair lift for straight stairs costs about $2,000 to $8,500 installed. Not a quote or an offer. Your price comes from the company. Source: HomeGuide (data updated 2025).

What moves the number

  • Straight or curved stairs. This is the biggest factor. Curved rails are built to fit your stairs.
  • Indoor or outdoor. Outdoor lifts need to handle weather.
  • Features. Folding rails, swivel seats and higher weight limits add cost.
  • New or used. Used and rental lifts cost less, mostly for straight stairs.

What to ask before you choose

  • "Do you offer used, rebuilt or rental lifts?" Renting can make sense if you only need it for a short time.
  • "What's the weight limit?"
  • "Does it work in a power outage?" Most run on batteries. Ask how long they last.
  • "What does the warranty cover, and who does repairs?"
  • "Will you buy it back if I don't need it later?" Some companies do for straight lifts.

The catch: Original Medicare usually doesn't pay for stair lifts. Before you buy, check with Medicaid, the VA, or your state's aging services office. Some offer help for home changes that let you stay safe at home.
